While Tapley's article briefly touches on LD879, Waste Management's dump-expansion bill, it doesn't mention that senators Saviello and Goodall played central roles in pushing it though, despite major public opposition. Industry lobbyists had attempted to pass the bill multiple times in the past four years, but only succeeded once Senator Saviello became chair of the Natural Resources Committee.
It would be interesting to see a second article from the point of view of members of the public who have repeatedly tried to have input on land-use decisions in their communities, and who have met strong resistance from many of the same legislators lauded in the article as saviors to Maine's environment.
