When an Indonesian colleague of P.'s visited two years later, and the talk turned to politics, he was informed that just over 50 percent of the eligible American public had voted in the last presidential election. He began laughing, thinking we were pulling his leg. When he was told that we were not joking, he stopped laughing. And began crying.

P&J, like many others, were saddened to hear of the passing of former Urinal reporter Doane Hulick last week. He was a consummate journalist, with barely an ego to speak of, rare in these days of Kardashian-style bloggers. A quiet man, Doane was the kind of guy you always wished to cover a story you were involved in, as P. often was, because he could understand the meat of the issue and produce a fair and honest report on it. That's all one can ask.

If you've lived in the Biggest Little for any length of time, you ought to know who John Rollins is. In the 1950s, John was one of the state's greatest schoolboy athletes. He went on to serve for many years on the Providence City Council and is well known for his generosity and good deeds.

John is also a very, very good cook. On November 8 from 4 to 7 pm, his skills will be on display at a fundraiser for the John Rollins Scholarship Fund at his alma mater, La Salle Academy.

The venue is Sidebar Bistro, that cool and cozy restaurant and nightclub at 127 Dorrance St in downtown Providence. Sidebar Head Ramrod Art Coloian, a foodie of note himself, will hand the kitchen over to John, offering up the regular staff as assistants.

P&J spoke with John this week and he gave us a preview of the menu. Appetizers will include scallops wrapped in maple-flavored bacon, crabmeat balls, and shredded braised beef in phyllo dough cups; entrees will include Jambalaya with white rice and Veal Marsala with pasta. There will also be cheesecake and crème brûlée for dessert.

This will be some kind of feast and many great people will be there. To get tickets, reserve a table, or learn more about the event, call Tim Welsh at La Salle at 401.351.7750 x 135 or email  twelsh@lasalle-academy.org.

Your superior correspondents highly recommend a special event at the Met, slated for November 4. It's the release party for a new CD by Sarah Lupo. Yes, she is the wife of Rich "Bwana" Lupo, the club impresario. But long before they married, Jorge heard her sing and tried, unsuccessfully, to recruit her for his Jackiebeat Orchestra.Doors open at 5 pm, there's no cover charge, and Sarah is scheduled to go on at 6:30 pm. Also on the bill are Lloyd's Lamas and the always reliable (and sometimes unpredictable) Mark Cutler and the Men of Great Courage.

Democratic State Representative Donna Walsh of Charlestown is, by all accounts, an excellent representative, known to be one of the toughest and most honest legislators in the state. If the Republicans were serious about trying to unseat her, you'd think they might have come up with a candidate a little more qualified than Tina Baker Jackson.
