Longfellow Books confirmed Tuesday that DAVE EGGERS will deliver a reading at SPACE Gallery on SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 25. Details about the event are coming soon, but here’s what we know:

Eggers will be joined by Valentino Achak Deng, the subject/narrator of Eggers’s brilliant new novel, What Is the What. The book is a slightly fictionalized account of Deng’s experience as one of the “Lost Boys of Sudan.” Thoughts and events from Deng’s current life in the United States are juxtaposed with his journey from a contented childhood in southern Sudan to refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya, after his village was ransacked by government-funded Islamic militants. The book was just named one of the finalists for the National Book Critics Circle Award for best fiction book of 2006.

Before the reading at SPACE, the two will hold a pizza party with members of Portland’s Sudanese community.
Tickets for the reading will go on sale soon. They won’t be cheap, but all proceeds from the event will go to The Telling Room, a local nonprofit program that teaches children and teenagers how to develop their writing skills.
More to come as details emerge.
