The challenge for liberals, then — at a moment when they're besieged both locally and nationally — is to figure out a way to use the Web to play effective defense. It's a daunting challenge, but the need is dire.

"This online stuff, this Internet stuff — it's a tool, and anybody can use a tool," says Blue Mass Group's Kravitz. "It's historical happenstance that we on the left got there first and figured it out first, and people on the left shouldn't assume that it's going to stay that way. Because clearly it's not."

And beyond the fact that this struck me as a blatant attempt at intimidation, it demonstrated how tricky journalism's new, collaboration-driven future could be.

    Back in February 2007, a few months after a political neophyte named Deval Patrick cruised to victory in the Massachusetts governor's race with help from a political blog named Blue Mass Group (BMG) — which whipped up pro-Patrick sentiment while aggressively rebutting the governor-to-be's critics — I sized up a recent conservative entry in the local blogosphere.
