Now comes another chapter, this one involving former MSU football player Derrick Davis (also a cornerback, incidentally). Davis was actually arrested in December on coke- trafficking charges and was due to stand trial in that case this August; he had also been arrested in September while out on bail for assaulting his girlfriend. Amazingly — this is the kind of thing that makes one rethink liberal-sentencing guidelines — Davis got exactly 30 days in jail for that assault, which resulted in one of his girlfriend’s ribs being broken.
So after doing his 30 days and then getting popped again a few months later on coke charges (he was caught selling to an informant), Davis was out on $20,000 bail for most of this year. Then this past week he got drunk and went after his girlfriend again. According to reports, Davis was inebriated and “throwing things” at the woman.
In response, authorities changed Davis’s bail arrangement for the coke case from $20,000 to $75,000. Apparently it costs $55,000 to throw something at your girlfriend.
They also gave him five additional days in jail. I’m giving him 70 points for the whole messy series of events — and let’s hope we don’t see Montana in this column again soon.
Crimontana, pt. II
An additional note in the Wilson murder case: apparently one of Wilson’s teammates, backup cornerback (what is it with Montana cornerbacks?) Qwenton Freeman, was at the scene of the crime when Smoot, Wilson’s alleged victim, was killed. According to news reports, however, Freeman is refusing to cooperate with authorities.
Wilson is still in jail in Los Angeles County; he was due to have a hearing this week, but it was rescheduled for July 9. His bail is set at $2 million, which means he’s likely not going anywhere.
Authorities indicated Freeman may eventually be taken into custody, either as a witness or for other, presumably darker, reasons. We’ll keep you posted.
