The title makes no more sense here than it does in Buchan's novel or Hitchcock's adaptation, and as a movie this 39 Steps is Masterpiece Classics warm and cozy rather than Hitchcock quirky and disturbing. But Penry-Jones and Leonard play cat-and-mouse as elegantly as Donat and Carroll. Many Bond films have done worse.
