Mixed messages from Camp Carcieri

Governor Carcieri might have precluded the stormy reaction to his executive order on immigration if he had initially talked with some of the people on his new oversight panel. Instead, we got a lot of distracting side battles at a time when the state remains challenged by a fiscal crisis.

And now, by backtracking, the governor has angered Terry Gorman and some others by not including a RIILE representative on the oversight group.

With new communications guru John Robitaille at the helm, the administration seems to think the best defense is a strong offense when reporters ask tough questions.

Yet when Steve Peoples takes a look at the extent of labor influence on Smith Hill, the governor takes a pass on commenting for the Sunday paper?

Peoples's story, btw, was a good read, but not particularly shocking for close political observers. In other words, yes, labor is politically active and organized, but its precise influence is probably less than that described by critics.

I think the Governor could have put a little balance on this panel by including a representative of RIILE.It is a legitimate grassroots organization and it is not in the business of promoting anti-immigrant feelings. It is concerned mainly with the inaction of government relative to the enforcement of existing immigration laws.I have attended about half a dozen meetings, including one where I delivered an address on the problems of illegal immigration.
I have never heard any blatantly racist remarks nor are they condoned by the leadership.I don't want to hear about Dave Richardson-he's an independent individual and he's solely responsible for his words and actions. Is Steven Brown responsible for the convicted pedophiles in the VA and NY chapters of the ACLU?
I can't believe the ACLU doesn't see a problem with a plethora of religious leaders being on an advisory panel overseeing the results of a governmental order.they fly into a bitch tizzy if some children sing Christmas carols in school. How does Rabbi Flam feel about that?I am a nondenominational believer in a Creator and I don't much care for a bunch of preachers sitting on this panel in their religious capacities.Let them do their jobs in their houses of worship.Steven Brown is conveniently ignoring this situation. Most of the agencies represented are organizations that assist both legal immigrants and illegal aliens, but their partisan positions are apparently of no concern.I have lost some respect for the Governor over this issue.I don't feel good about that because on balance I've supported him on many issues.
BTW not everyone in RIILE is on the same page.We have people from both major parties and independents.i myself do not like the term "anchor baby" and don't want to change the law making someone born here a citizen. My solution is better border control, meaning less illegal entrants coming here to give birth.I know this puts me at odds with some other members, but that's what real people's organization is about. There's no "little red book".
