Dancing on indie rock's grave: Amsterdam's Zea.

1. No idea how we missed these when they came out in 2003 and 2004, respectively, but we came across them again thanks to Tommie Sunshine's "Lobotomy Eyes Rock N Roll" mixtape, just serviced to press types. (We're checking on whether the link is share-able.) We swear, the Fiery Furnaces track wasn't meant as a response to sour Lemon, but check it: not only does this sound like the Stones circa Tattoo You when the guitars kick in and like Kraftwerk muzak on a diet of twinkies and slinkies when they don't, it's also a cover of a really fucking old and sado-masochistic gospel-blues tune. "He beat me he banged me again" is just so direct and brutal and thug. Eleanor is killing shit on this.

Guessing that Tommie found "We Buried Indie Rock" from these guys, but wherever it came from, it deserves another shot. The plot: Amsterdam electro-pop boys bang their head on the punk rock and then dance on its grave, recalling how they fell in love with Tanya Donelly and Juliana Hatfield in '91-'92-'93, wished they were Evan Dando, geeked out to Yo La Tengo, to the Swirlies and to Polvo, started bands, scenes, and fanzines . . . and have now become a bunch of nostalgic old hacks? I mean, this isn't just our theme song -- it's our fucking epitaph:
