John Darnielle's cult audience has been split since he began booking his lo-fi indie-pop group
MOUNTAIN GOATS into an actual studio. But the latest Goats disc, The Sunset Tree (4 AD), feels like a breakthrough on several levels: its lyrics find Darnielle coming to terms with his abusive stepfather, and thanks in part to producer John Vanderslice's strings and keys, the music is the group's most accessible yet Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave, Boston 7:30 pm $18-$23 617.369.3306.
