Posted at 04:12 by Importer

John Darnielle's cult audience has been split since he began booking his lo-fi indie-pop group MOUNTAIN GOATS into an actual studio. But the latest Goats disc, The Sunset Tree (4 AD), feels like a breakthrough on several levels: its lyrics find Darnielle coming to terms with his abusive stepfather, and thanks in part to producer John Vanderslice's strings and keys, the music is the group's most accessible yet Museum of Fine Arts, 465 Huntington Ave, Boston 7:30 pm $18-$23 617.369.3306.

FREE: the first 25 kids with college ID to show up at the MFA can nab tickets to this gig gratis, not to mention Oreos, hot cocoa, Jim Jarmusch films, and Ansel Adams exhibitry. Details in this week's paper.
