One of the world’s few surviving revival houses, the Brattle has been bringing (and bringing back) high-quality films popular annd obscure to Harvard Square for decades. The theater has been showing films on its original big screen since 1933, and it puts any modern movie-house to shame. Specializing in independent and foreign films as well as documentaries, it also hosts local film festivals. Call or check the weekly Phoenix for film times and updated listings. The second Tues of each month is “Off the Couch” Tues, where moviegoers chat with the Boston Psychoanalytic Society about a particular film or subject. The Coolidge also hosts “Divas in the Dark,” a new series dedicated to film adaptations of major operas, free admission. Throughout the year, this beloved community venue hosts specialty nights, such as all-night sci-fi, animation festivals, and homemade-porn fests. General admission is $9.50 adults, $7.50 for students from Fri-Sun, $6.50 for members, seniors and students from Mon-Thurs. Matinees (shows before 4 pm) cost $7.50. Not your average purveyor of Hollywood schlock. Thoughtful films large and small end up on this screen, making it a popular stop for students, film buffs, and all those cultured types who’ve never seen an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. Check the weekly Phoenix listings for current schedule information. Tickets $9.25, $7 for children under 12 and seniors over 62. Matinees, $7. As befits the setting, films at the MFA tend toward the artistic. Also often the foreign. Tickets $9, $8 for students and seniors. Some special programs have higher ticket prices. An IMAX theater at Boston’s Museum of Science. Call or visit the museum’s Web site for show times, and call at least one day in advance to buy tickets. Mugar Omni Theater tickets are $9, $8 for seniors, $7 for children 3 to 11. Evening discounts of $2.50 off the regular ticket prices are available for all shows after 6 pm. Various combination tickets allowing admission to the museum’s exhibit halls, planetarium, or laser shows are also available. The Science Museum has also installed digital projection systems that allow visitors to watch movies in 3-D without those silly red-and-blue cardbord glasses. All films described on the MOS Web site.
