The permanent collection traces the history of American art from the Colonial era to the present, including portraits by Copley, Stuart, and Sargent; landscapes by Cole, Church, and Homer; 20th-century works by OÆKeeffe and Wyeth; and The Arts of Life in America, a five-panel mural by Thomas Hart Benton. Open on Tues, Wed, and Fri from 11 to 5 pm, on Thurs until 8 pm, on Sat from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sun from noon to 5 pm. Admission $9, $8 for seniors, $7 for students, free for children under 12.

Among the pieces in the permanent collection are Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, European paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, American decorative art (featuring the Wallace Nutting collection of 17th- and 18th-century furniture), and the Amistad FoundationÆs collection of more than 7000 items documenting African-American history and culture. Open Wed through Fri from 11 am to 5 pm, and on Sat and Sun from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission $10, $8 for seniors, $5 for children ages 13 and up and college students with ID, free for children 12 and under. Open until 8 pm on the first Thurs of every month. Admission $5 between 5 and 8 pm.

The Yale Center for British Art is home to the most comprehensive collection of British art outside (where else?) Great Britain. The collection surveys the development of British art, life, and thought from the Elizabethan period to the present. Open Tues through Sat from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sun from noon to 5 pm. Free.

This so-called gallery is actually the oldest college art museum in the Western Hemisphere. It features paintings by van Gogh, Picasso, Eakins, and other masters.
