The permanent collection traces the history of American art from the Colonial era to the present, including portraits by Copley, Stuart, and Sargent; landscapes by Cole, Church, and Homer; 20th-century works by O’Keeffe and Wyeth; and The Arts of Life in America, a five-panel mural by Thomas Hart Benton. Open on Tues, Wed, and Fri from 11 am to 5 pm, on Thurs until 8 pm, on Sat from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sun from noon to 5 pm. Weekly schedule listed below. Watercolor with June Webster every Tuesday beginning June 16. Admission $9, $8 for seniors, $7 for students, free for children under 12. Admission before noon on Sat free for all. Open free to all fathers on Father's Day.

Among the 45,000 pieces in the permanent collection are Renaissance and Baroque masterpieces, European paintings from the 16th and 17th centuries, American decorative art (featuring the Wallace Nutting collection of 17th- and 18th-century furniture), and the Amistad Foundation’s collection of more than 7000 items documenting African-American history and culture. Open Wed through Sat from 11 am to 5 pm, and Sun from 10 am to 5 pm. Admission $10, $8 for seniors, $5 for children ages 13 and up and college students with ID, free for children 12 and under. Open every first Thurs of the month from 11 am to 5 pm for $5.

The Yale Center for British Art is home to the most comprehensive collection of British art outside (where else?) Great Britain. This so-called gallery is actually the oldest college art museum in the Western hemisphere. It features paintings by van Gogh, Picasso, Eakins, and other masters. The permanent collection of 185,000 works also includes prints, drawings, American decorative arts, photographs, and art from Africa, Asia, and the ancient Americas.
