Boston Center for the Arts
With the 2004 addition of the Calderwood Pavilion, there are now four performance spaces — and five resident companies, plus various recidivists — doing business at the BOSTON CENTER FOR THE ARTS (BCA). When the former Boston Flower Exchange was turned into an arts center in the crime-happy 1970s, no taxi driver would take you there. Now the valets charge $25 to park your car. Well, that’s not such a good thing, but the buzz of any given evening — when a theatergoer can walk up to the box office and choose among offerings by the Huntington Theatre Company, SpeakEasy Stage Company, Company One, Boston Theatre Works, and Zeitgeist Stage Company, among other troupes — is. Throw in the gastronomic bookends of Hamersley’s Bistro and Sibling Rivalry, not to mention the Beehive in the middle, and who misses the popcorn?
