Best Way To Counter The Death Of Criticism
The Brattle Theatre's "Elements of Cinema"
The canard "everyone is a critic" is coming true, as all the professional opinion givers get downsized. More and more, average movie viewers are being forced to do the dirty job of analyzing and evaluating films themselves. (And unlike the pros, they've still got to pay $10 to see them!) So what do you do if you don't know "two thumbs up" from mise en scène? A good start is the BRATTLE THEATRE's "The Elements of Cinema." It meets twice a month on Saturdays to screen a classic film, then allows for participants to have a discussion with a knowledgeable film person. Past selections have included Citizen Kane and Rules of the Game, and such speakers as Boston Globe Pulitzer Prize–winner Mark Feeney and Harvard Film Archive programmer Haden Guest. And it's free!
