There are places you can go where snobbery is inevitable — or at least a strong possibility. For example, France, high-end clothing stores, and record shops (dare you ask if they have a copy of Frampton Comes Alive!). Some bike shops will snub inquisitive newbie riders who wander in off the street, but WHEELWORKS — which has locations in Porter Square and Belmont — is not one of these. The staff is both bike-savvy and friendly to serious cyclists and casual riders alike. They’ll let you peruse their extensive selection of bikes — road, hybrid, mountain, BMX, and more — take them out on a tree-lined, bike-laned side street, and get to riding. Our non-scientific hypothesis is that it’ll take two blocks on That Perfect Bike before you decide you need to buy it. And they won’t even quiz you on where (or what) the rear derailleur is. (You should learn that eventually, though.)
