Best Sporting-Goods Store
City Sports
Count CITY SPORTS on the list of Boston’s local-business success stories (along with fellow Best Readers’ Poll winners Newbury Comics and the Tannery). Mike Kennedy and Eric Martin were high-school friends and occasional tennis players, both working their first full-time jobs in Boston in 1983, when they saw the need for a one-stop sporting-goods shop in the city. So they opened one and, 26 years later, the company has since expanded to 16 stores across the East Coast, as well as become a Phoenix readers’ favorite hub for sports-related paraphernalia. That’s cause for hoopla in a city as obsessed with sports as this one is. City Sports stocks running shoes for all types of feet, flip flops (for those precious few warm Boston months), hiking and camping gear, yoga mats, tennis racquets, and out-of-season merchandise with its prices slashed dramatically.
