During the annual NEWPORT WINTER FESTIVAL (the third week in February), you can go skating at the Sovereign Bank Family Skating Center, participate in a sand sculpture contest on Easton Beach, join a city-wide scavenger hunt, taste the results of a chili or pizza cook-off, watch an ice-sculpting competition, attend one of several concerts, or take a historical tour of the waterfront. For the latter, you get to taste, touch, and smell your way through history, back in the days when chocolate, spices, and rum were at the heart of Thames Street commerce. In addition, there are servants' tours at the Astors' Beechwood, guided tours of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum, helicopter rides, winery tours, micro-brew sippings, and special tastings and discounts at many Newport restaurants.
