Best Jazzing-Up Of Salads
La Laiterie
With a stated philosophy of using local ingredients as much as possible, chef/owner Matt Jennings and chef Ben Sukle at LA LAITERIE come up with marvelous salad combinations, especially in the summer. "A walk through the garden" is aptly named, with pea tendrils, baby carrots, two kinds of radishes, two kinds of cherry tomatoes, plus blueberries and, our new favorite seasonal thing: small yellow ground cherries, cousins to tomatillos, but much sweeter. Even the Bibb lettuce salad, which also had bits of smoked ham, hard-boiled egg, and shaved piave cheese, had those welcome little bursts of flavor from Rhode Island blueberries. The berries also showed up in the desserts, by Kate Jennings: in a spice cake with a citrus curd, and in a blueberry upside-down cake with fresh chevre ice cream (the Farmstead cheese shop is right next door and part of this enterprise). | 188 Wayland Avenue, Providence | 401.274.7177 | farmsteadinc.com/lalaiterie.html
