Roger Williams Park Zoo

When the Fabric of Africa exhibit at the ROGER WILLIAMS PARK ZOO opened last fall, it was the culmination of a four-year renovation project for the outdoor space where giraffes and elephants roam the plains of Providence. Gone are the moats in the elephants' area, but they now have an 11-foot-deep pond, complete with waterfalls, the better to splash themselves and each other. They also have a muddy spot to wallow in, tree limbs to scratch their backs on, and double the turf they had before. A new platform between the giraffe and elephant areas allows visitors to get as close as 10 feet without endangering the animals or themselves. Nearby, the zebras and wildebeests are sharing a space, as they do in the wild, and this summer a booth with interactive exhibits about all the animals in the Fabric of Africa exhibit will be open. | 1000 Elmwood Avenue, Providence | 401.785.3510 | rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org
