Roger Williams Paddle Trail
Who says summer city life has to be all about steaming sidewalks and honking horns? Not only does Providence have Roger Williams Park, it also has the ROGER WILLIAMS PADDLE TRAIL. It goes nowhere near the bucolic splendor of the park — it winds from the itty-bitty (but verdant) Freedom Green Park in East Providence through the gritty charms of the downtown Providence waterways. The park is usually the end spot for canoers and kayakers who have paddled down the winding, shallow Ten Mile River to that point, having passed the occasional muskrat diving out of sight or turtle sunning on a rock. For city-based paddlers, continuing westward is probably a healthy segue back into urban life, what with traffic noise likely on bridges they'll pass under. | For a map of this and other paddling opportunities, go to exploreri.org
