Sure, there's the excuse of guiding your mate over a tricky piece of the path, but if the trail is wide enough, there's nothing more romantic than clasping hands under a canopy of trees, as you shuffle through fallen leaves underfoot, listen for bird calls, or point out wildflower clusters. All of these and more can happen at the AUDUBON SOCIETY OF RHODE ISLAND'S WILDLIFE REFUGES. One of the most challenging but rewarding hikes is at Long Pond Woods in Hopkinton, with its 220 acres of boulder-strewn terrain among dense groves of mountain laurel and rhododendron, shaded by towering oaks and hemlocks. When you reach the large stone outcropping above Long and Ell ponds, you'll realize that your strenuous clambering over rocks was worth it.
