David R. Godine
People bemoan the pitiable state of the publishing industry today — the falsified memoirs, the endless self-helpery, the disregard for “serious” or “literary” fiction. But all’s not lost in a foamy sea of cheap bestsellers. Small, potent, independent publishing houses still exist, and DAVID R. GODINE exemplifies the form. The 30 or so titles that Godine puts out each year — fiction and nonfiction (Andre Dubus, John Banville, Sarah Orne Jewett), translations, poetry (Mark Doty, Leland Kinsey), art books, and kids’ books — are selected and produced with extraordinary care. Printed on acid-free paper, and often cloth-bound, the books reflect the preferences of Godine himself, and the company is guided by the principle that, though these books might not top bestseller lists, they are worth putting out into the world nonetheless.
