In Your Ear

High Fidelity, Nick Hornby’s opus-turned-John Cusack–movie, yields a high concentration of enjoyable moments, one of which is when record-store employees Rob and Dick are idly passing a Monday afternoon with a Belle and Sebastian album. The boisterous Barry (played by Jack Black) bursts in, disgustedly deems the tune “sad bastard music,” and enthusiastically produces his “Monday Morning Mix Tape,” which Rob vetoes before the first song, “Walking on Sunshine,” by Katrina and the Waves, reaches the midway point. Hilarious musical arguments ensue, and Barry calls the store a “fascist regime.” Where can one witness such an entertaining conversation in person? Not on iTunes, my friend. Try IN YOUR EAR, Allston’s underground used-record and -CD wonderland. We have yet to spot a Barry look-alike there, but have definitely overhead some noteworthy record-clerk banter while thumbing through the many vinyl copies of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours.
