Fort Sumner Park
Warning: This can actually be an NSFC (Not Safe For Children) make-out point. We have witnessed actual grinding taking place on a bench here. It was kind of gross. But usually, this tiny treasure is simply a perfect spot for dog walking, reflection, or taking in a bird’s-eye view of the city. From the top of North Street, the overlook looms directly above Washington Street, with Bayside and I-295 to the right, and downtown to the left. You can just see the Commercial Street waterfront. We’re not saying it’s the most beautiful spot in the world, or even in Portland, but it provides a realistic, warts-and-all vista that’s especially nice just after a snowfall or at sunset. In that way, the park is kind of like most make-outs — all the better for its flaws, and just right every once in a while.
