The Necks |
Australia's the NECKS are the sort of band who thwart classification. Pianist Chris Abrahams, drummer Tony Buck, and bassist Lloyd Swanton are avant-garde, ambient-drone, post-rock, and jazz in equal measure, but that's not enough to explain their extraordinary, quasi-hallucinogenic music.
The Necks' improvisations are long-form masterpieces that typically run for an hour, meditative and minimal, with gloriously wrought details and a transporting groove and swing. They'll be performing at the ICA this Friday along with composer, electronic musician, and jazz Fender-Rhodes specialist (with Dave Douglas, Chris Potter, Tim Berne) CRAIG TABORN. Check this column on-line for a clip from a live Necks set on Australia's ABC network.
On Valentine's Day, WEIRDO RECORDS, the lovely little record shop that could, will be celebrating its grand opening in style. Albany's BURNT HILLS and Western Mass's BABY JESUS BURNOUT will perform, and the inimitable lounge/noise selector DJ NING NONG will spin appropriately unusual tunes.
"I'm feeling extremely grateful for the huge outpouring of help and congratulations I've received over the past few weeks," says Weirdo impresario ANGELA SAWYER. "I really want Weirdo to be a warm home for the fantastic, electric community of people who like screwy sounds here in Boston."
The party is invite-only, but you can give Angela a call or drop her an e-mail at weirdo@weirdorecords.com.
