So how do these movies find their way into your songs?
Well, it’s like I guess any good song or good movie, it gets out into the world and gets in people’s heads and it helps them find their way. It’s almost like a kick-start. You watch The Breakfast Club and you walk away from it and you’re like, “Duh, of course! I’m here to live and not be afraid to share who I am and talk about stupid shit that I’ve done.” I find that even now I’m always like, “Why didn’t I say what I really felt? Why am I holding back? Who am I trying to please?” In the end, that’s all we have, the ability to express how we feel about what’s happening. 

I think the ’80s are back in style now. Are there any trends you’d like to see make a comeback or stay buried in the past?
What’s kind of cool about now is it feels like all eras exist at once. It’s like, look at all the stuff you have to choose from and to play with. I don’t know what’s actually trendy for 15 to 25-year-olds myself, I know what is fun for me and what looks cool or sounds cool and that’s what I go after. It’s kind of cool to see that kids now are all over the map and I don’t know what’s actually trendy or not, but it’s really how you wear it and who you are. Any style I think, if you’re having fun with it, it can be really cool.   

So I guess my final question is, “Is it true when we get old, our hearts die?”
I think that’s just an artistic expression because our hearts can never really die, you know what I mean? There’s people who’ve grown old and they’re young as ever, even though they can barely walk around. Then there’s other people who are really old, their hearts are still there, but they’ve kind of died, they’re still there but they’re covered up. For me, that’s what that line says to me, when I hear that line. And saying it and singing it is like, “You know what? I don’t ever want to go there.” It would a bum out to waste life that way and miss out on a whole bunch of years of your life because you kind of fell asleep at the wheel and were just cruising.
