Mean Creek
After kicking things into overdrive with last year's monolithic debut, The Sky (Or the Underground) (Old Flame), local four-piece bootgazers Mean Creek wreaked havoc on eardrums across the state this year with roaring epic anthems of geologic scale. Mean Creek's oversaturated post-rock tends to implode like rickety old high-rises, but the band emerge unscathed after every show. This was the year where they asked the big questions. Why are we on Earth? Will I be erased? Can I turn this up louder? And just when you thought you'd seen every combination of jet-engine guitars, rusty synth rumble, and airplane-hangar drum batteries, they set a couple of bonfires and lay into a few post-industrial folk ballads. This Saturday's seven-inch release party at Great Scott should be one of the most memorable nights of the summer.
