Medeski Martin & Wood
Born right here in Boston in 1991, MMW have continued to grow and explore over two decades and 14 separate releases (including a couple of celebrated discs with guitarist John Scofield). Last year’s lavish The Evolutionary Set (Indirecto) was a five-CD, one-DVD, double-vinyl collection that showed them in every guise — from their acoustic-trio beginnings to soul jazz and funk to the electronic outta-space improvs that draw from early electric Miles, all-era Sun Ra, and plenty of hip-hop. Now commanding a larger audience through the jam-band scene, “avant-groove” masters John Medeski, Billy Martin, and Chris Wood continue to challenge their audiences and themselves.
