St. Clair Annex

By JOHNETTE RODRIGUEZ  |  June 24, 2009

The lobster roll was generous and delicious with shredded lettuce underneath, just a bit of mayo, no celery to stretch the lobster meat, and a few pickles on the side. It tasted so fresh, it was like a breath of summer in this cold, rainy June.

The chicken bistro sandwich was grilled chicken breast with bacon, Swiss cheese, roasted peppers and onions, and a Dijon sauce, on toasted rye bread. A carefully assembled combo whose components made a wonderful whole.

At breakfast, the Nicholases serve up homemade scones and muffins, along with buttermilk pancakes, egg sandwiches in croissants and, on Sundays and holidays, popovers! Joann also turns out pies, including the rhubarb one ($3.75) I tasted after our sandwiches. It was a bit sweeter than my own version, but for a rhubarb-lover like myself, anything rhubarby is just fine.

As for the ice cream, made onsite, let's just say that we're still partial to our hometown ice cream, which seems creamier and more flavorful than St. Clair's. But then, we only tried two flavors, so maybe we need another taste test . . . soon.
