Blackballed: The Bobby Dukes Story

Only makes you long for some Christopher Guest

CORDDRY: The reason 'Blackballed' made it this far?The presence of The Daily Show’s Rob Corddry might explain why this 2004 trifle has gotten some theatrical release, but it doesn’t justify belaboring into 90 minutes a premise that at best could sustain a 10-minute TV sketch. Corddry plays the disgraced paintball champ of the title — on the brink of leading his team to its fourth tournament, he “wipes” (i.e., covertly expunges traces of an opponent’s hit). Even if that’s your idea of irony, and I’m not being judgmental, the subsequent tedium about Bobby struggle’s 10 years later to put together another team and vindicate himself might still try your patience. That seems the case with some of the performers (the game Corddry excepted), whose increasingly strained improvisations suggest diminishing interest. First-time feature director Brant Sersen’s sloppy, hand-held digital photography and suffocating hilarity only made me long for the next Christopher Guest mockumentary.
