Academy Award Nominated Shorts: Live Action and Animation

Better than a month at the multiplex

"The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello"

What great fun, even if these 10 shorts pack no small measure of loss and shattered illusions. Almost every one offers more imagination than a month at the multiplex. In Sharon Colman’s “Badgered,” a simple animal seeks simple respite, and watercolors and sketches ebb and flow with well-honed accord. John Canemaker & Peggy Stern’s Oscar-winning “The Moon and the Son: An Imagined Conversation” turns the bond between father and son into a visual meditation on death and immortality. A plucky rag doll has at a monster in Shane Acker’s “9,” a play on childhood fears and fancies that ties in nicely with Rúnar Rúnarsson & Thor S. Sigurjónsson’s “The Last Farm,” live-action cinema as ecological fable. My vote for best of the bunch goes to Anthony Lucas’s “The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello”: it’s like Matisse’s cut-paper constructions come to life and journeying off to the underworld.
