Awkward and amateurish take on hooligan surf tribe

Bra Boys

A cheaply produced Australian documentary of local interest, Bra Boys has now been exported to America, doubtless because bankable Russell Crowe, sporting his native Aussie accent, provides the voiceover. Far from Sydney’s fashionable beaches is broken-down Maroubra Beach, where the impoverished residents either brawl bare-knuckled or challenge the extraordinary waves. The Bra Boys are a “surf” tribe often in trouble with the law when they aren’t out there in the ocean winning surfer medallions. Many would see them as hooligans. This awkward documentary romanticizes them — no surprise, since the amateurish co-director (with Macario De Souza), Sunny Abberton, is a Bra Boy bro’ himself. 90 minutes | Kendall Square
