Review: The Girl From Monaco

Satisfying and not overly complicated

This sensual tale of dangerous love comes from writer/director Anne Fontaine (Dry Cleaning, How I Killed My Father). In glamorous Monaco one night, freewheeling TV weather girl Audrey (electric newcomer Louise Bourgoin) seduces strait-laced lawyer Bertrand (Intimate Strangers' Fabrice Luchini), a Parisian lawyer defending the murderess of an Italian porn star.

Bertrand's laconic bodyguard, Christophe (Alias Betty's Roschdy Zem), sees through Audrey's games and tries to protect his boss from her. But sad-eyed Bertrand falls hard for the saucy femme fatale, and he's fascinated that Christophe has little to say about his own brief fling with Audrey.

Drawn into Monaco's glitzy nightlife, Bertrand is on the verge of a wrong-headed epiphany when Christophe intervenes. La fille de Monaco's tone shifts wildly, from ersatz and light to dark and heavy. Still, like rustic French cuisine, it's satisfying and no more complicated than it needs to be.
