VIDEO: The trailer for Jennifer's Body.
You are no doubt approaching Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody's new venture into horror comedy with gritted teeth, expecting the cinematic equivalent of being bludgeoned into a bloody pulp by an adorable novelty hamburger phone spewing snappy quips out of its receiver. Which is exactly what you get — yet it's strangely enjoyable.
Karyn Kusama's film pits the dorky Anita, a/k/a "Needy" (Amanda Seyfried), against her cruel, smoldering-hot BFF Jennifer (Megan Fox), who happens to be a boy-slaughtering succubus. It's all so over the top.
It just kind of works — there's something delightful about watching a jailbait hottie cooing "You're just Jell-O 'cuz you're not invited" one moment and slurping the entrails out of a pulverized jock's thoracic cavity the next. Redolent of such works as Heathers, Ginger Snaps, and even True Blood, Jennifer's Body may not be the freshest cadaver, but it's a rather exquisite corpse all the same.
