Music seen at SPACE Gallery, March 28, 2008

Friday night showed why our Canadian hip-hop friends like to visit Portland so often. Our little city rolled out the red carpet (actually, just rolled back the snow for a night) for Ghettosocks, an MC from Halifax, Nova Scotia. It just missed a sellout, but the audience's enthusiasm took up all the space at SPACE.
Ghettosocks ripped through his tracks, accompanied by his “band,” a/k/a Fresh Kills and special guest Gabe FM. His beats hyped the crowd and provided fertile beds for Gabe’s cuts and Count Sockula’s pop-culture spit. The incisive “Steal From Walmart” tore through the aisles, turning over endcaps, and leaving shoppers screaming.
I hadn't seen Sontiago in a while; she has clearly reached a new level of performance. Her comfort in the spotlight kicked off her set with Dilly Dilly (who soloed what many called her "best set ever") and Gabe FM. Their R. Kelly “Real Talk” moment, with the women in Kell’s role, was fantastically engaging in its strangeness.
