Therefore I Am |
Attn, emo nation: prepare to claw at your tear-streaked cheeks with joyous envy, for local heartthrobs THEREFORE I AM have shown sufficient leg to get themselves signed to Albany’s esteemed EQUAL VISION RECORDS. They’ll be collaborating with the one, the only MIKE POORMAN (ex–HOT ROD CIRCUIT) on their full-length debut, which is set for release next spring. Visit www.equalvision.com to watch a video announcement from the band members — and discover a few reasons why you should never let them cook for you. . . . Fans of the SELF-RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS, listen up: they’re taking a little time off from the East Coast. Drummer/singer JAKE HALL is up and moving to Man Francisco (as de facto frontman MAX KOEPKE puts it). Fear not: the band ain’t kaput — they’ll be recording a new album out West and making a triumphant return to Boston in ’09. Blubber your goodbyes to them this Friday, August 29, at T.T. the Bear’s, where they’ll be joined by HELLO ECHO (featuring former APOLLO SUNSHINErSEAN ALYWARD), RONALD REAGAN (“Boston’s premier ’80s pop sax duo,” says Koepke), JAKE & JESSE’S DIGITAL SANTA (we have no idea but remain mildly apprehensive), and DINA VARSELONE.

- Last days of New Alliance
Wandering around the Fenway’s soon-to-be-demolished RFT building feels like spelunking through the bowels of Boston’s hard-rock scene.

A few months ago this pint-sized diva from Down Under posted a cutesy rendition of Modest Mouse’s “Gravity Rides Everything” to her MySpace page.
- Bright lights, big band
The Bay State, born and nurtured at UMaine-Machias, are right in my personal wheelhouse: smart lyrics, huge choruses, and they edge outside your standard instrumentation.
- Condo Fucks | Fuckbook
In the unlikely event that you haven't already discovered this on the Internet: the Condo Fucks are not the "legendary New London, CT trio" they're described as on Matador's Web site.
- Review: My Bloody Valentine 3-D
Back in the early '80s, before Michael, Jason, and Freddy took off as slasher all-stars, there were other less famous genre seedlings, like the homonymous source for this pedestrian hack-'em-up about a pickax-wielding wonk gone berserk in a sleepy mining town.
- School of Seven Bells | Alpinisms
School of Seven Bells piece together two points of reference: the electronic music made popular by the Postal Service, Volvo ads, etc.; and the tightly controlled feedback of shoegaze.
- So wrong they're Righteous
Less than two years into their existence, the Self-Righteous Brothers already have a press kit worth of raves.
- The Cure | 4:13 Dream
Even with a dozen records behind him, Smith, when he puts his mind to it, remains a master at crafting concise masterpieces of bouncy pop majesty.
