John Harbison plus 10

By LLOYD SCHWARTZ  |  January 5, 2010

OPERA BOSTON | While we're waiting for its April production of Offenbach's witty military satire, La grande-duchessede Gérolstein, Boston's most adventurous opera company is involved in a daring project: the world premiere of its first commissioned opera, Madame White Snake, by Chinese-born composer Zhou Long. The libretto is based on a Chinese legend about an otherworldly creature's doomed love for a human being (shades of Ondine and Rusalka). Conducted by Opera Boston's Gil Rose, staged by former ART director Robert Woodruff, and featuring the celebrated male soprano Michael Miniaci and, in the title role, the glamorous Chinese soprano Ying Huang (Pamina in the Metropolitan Opera's Die Zauberflöte), it will be sung in English with English and Chinese subtitles, at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, 219 Tremont St, Boston | February 26, 28; March 2 | $29–$132 | 617.451.3388 or www.operaboston.org.

Editor's Note: In the Boston Symphony Orchestra write-up Pierre-Laurant Aimard was misidentified as Jean Pierre Aimard. The correction has been made above.

WGBH radio has ended its 58-year tradition of live Friday-afternoon BSO broadcasts, and it doesn't seem that public outcry is going to change that.

Classical music in Boston is so rich, having to pick 10 special events for this winter preview is more like one-tenth of the performances I'm actually looking forward to.

After its triumphant traversal of the complete Béla Bartók string quartets at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Borromeo Quartet was back for a free 20th- and 21st-century program at Jordan Hall, leading off with an accomplished recent piece by the 24-year-old Egyptian composer Mohammed Fairuz, Lamentation and Satire.
  •   OPEN SPACES  |  December 02, 2009
In my review of the memorable Brahms performances Sir Simon Rattle led with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for the Celebrity Series of Boston last month, I should have mentioned that one decision responsible for the beauty and spaciousness of the orchestral sound was the placement of the first and second violin sections on opposite sides of the stage.
