The original puppet maker appears upstage, stalked or guarded by a black figure, and made to move like a frantic puppet. After another group dance, the black figure reappears and undresses, to emerge as a woman (Sandra Marin Garcia). Pale, wearing only a flesh-colored bra and briefs, she looks like the puppet. Chu returns and manipulates Garcia into a duet of disjointed puppet moves and a passionate kiss. He "dies," and there's another stunning exchange of roles before the end.

From time to time we hear a pretentious voice intoning lines about who we are and how we end, from Voltaire's "Poem on the Lisbon Disaster." But as the final duet unfolds, the metaphysical angst subsides under the gorgeous dissonances and resolutions of Eric Whitacre's choral work Sleep.
