Members of the audience are guests at this freewheeling party (even offered — and served — wine). We're part of this affectionate bunch who care about art and music and want to help our friends out of their misery, even though sometimes, as in life, the wrong, hurtful thing may be said.
And there's always the emotion coming from the music itself — the "bad" singing and clunky piano technique expressing, with poignant sincerity, feelings of pain and loss and yearning and anger that well-trained voices often don't get near. In the last song, an old organ-grinder on a deserted street corner, surrounded by snarling dogs, becomes the ultimate artist playing only for himself. The wanderer asks if he can join him on his lonely journey. For once, there's no discussion, no explanation — just the heartbreaking song, which becomes a chilling and deeply moving moment of theater.
