Whether you’re a full-time vegetarian or not, it’s easy to forget those carnivorous cravings when you’re munching on meatless sandwiches from Jamaica Plain’s City Feed and Supply, the small, organic, health-food store nestled on Boylston Street near the Stonybrook T stop.
Take the vegan blt ($4.99), which comes complete with veggie “nayonaise” and tempeh fake bacon — it’s crunchy and creamy, just like the real thing. Or the tofurky deli sandwich ($5.99), a flavorful stack of marinated red onions, avocado, red-pepper relish, and condiments on top of medium-thick fake-meat deli slices. If you’re really hungry, you’ll find satisfaction in the farmer’s lunch ($5.49), a hearty combo of cheddar cheese, mustard, mayo, and granny smith–apple slices that packs a surprising bite with its layer of pickled green tomatoes.
But carnivores shouldn’t rule out city feed’s meaty offerings, which are just as tasty as their veggie counterparts. An added benefit: here, you can be sure your sandwich is healthier than anything you’d get at the deli down the street. The Italian sandwich ($5.99), for example, tucks nitrate-free salami in with mortadella and capocolla, and balances the sweet and salty meats with tangy piles of peppers, balsamic vinegar, and those marinated onions.
Or there’s always good-old PB&J, à la City Feed ($3.99) — natural peanut butter, locally made jams, and banana or apple slices. Naturally, it’s delicious.
