We saved a bit of room for the house-made desserts: tiramisu, black velvet cake, pistachio cake, or crème brulée. Adjacent diners praised the crème brulée and the tiramisu, a very hefty portion, so we went for the black velvet cake, never dreaming that “hefty” wouldn’t suffice to describe it: four layers of chocolate cake, filled with chocolate mousse, topped with dark chocolate ganache and surrounded by whipped cream and chocolate swirls. Initially competitive over splitting this wide wedge, we found that we couldn’t even finish it.
We loved the homey feel at Margaret’s, and we could pick out the regulars who brought in bottles of wine or beer. We appreciated the atmosphere of grown children, or very young ones, with their parents, and also of couples seeking a quiet rendezvous. For those seeking a livelier, hipper scene, there’s the next-door Elizabeth’s, with a full bar, pizzas, and many of Margaret’s menu items and pizzas — two strong spots for the price of one.
