Review: Chasing Madoff

Jeff Prosserman's documentary

Few will dispute the evil avarice behind the $50 billion Ponzi scheme Bernie Madoff masterminded. According to Jeff Prosserman's documentary, the recession of 2008 ultimately exposed the scam, but 10 years earlier, Harry Markopolos (who resides in Whitman, Massachusetts), a Wall Street insider turned independent finance investigator, was already dogging Madoff's trail. Prosserman recounts Markopolos's frustrations and the ineptitude of the SEC. Too bad that Markopolos, who has been labeled a quiet, behind-the-scenes doer, comes off here as a smug, paranoid know-it-all. Prosserman employs a lot of dramatic re-creations and shows some slick style that calls to mind Errol Morris or James Marsh, but when it comes to content, his camera turns didactic and mono-focused. Overall, the film offers little insight into Madoff, his shenanigans, or the financial collapse of 2008.

Dan Lindsay and T. J. Martin's Oscar-winning documentary about an underequipped high-school football team competing against big-time programs across Tennessee offers a potent contemplation on race and opportunity.

Regrettably, this team loses a lot of Seuss's quirkiness, though not the message about corporate greed and slash-and-burn imperialism.

The filmmakers deliver some gorgeous landscape shots of Asia Minor and leverage the 3D perspective to good effect, but the time between such moments of relief can seem like an eternity of movie hell.

The Underworld series got long in the tooth early, but here, in the fourth installment (directed by Swede Måns Mårlind), it grows new fangs.
  •   REVIEW: JOYFUL NOISE  |  January 10, 2012
There's not much joy but there's plenty of noise of the rafter-rocking gospel singing variety in Tony Graff's musical dramedy.
