Review: Beeswax

Don't expect intensity of any kind

Beeswax as in, mind your own . . . ? As in the thin cells that separate us all in this big beehive called life? The title of Andrew Bujalski's third feature invites such idle speculation, and so does his Easter-egg-colored film. Jeannie, who's paraplegic, runs a used-clothing store in Austin; her twin sister, Lauren (real-life twins Tilly and Maggie Hatcher), teaches, or something. What passes for a crisis arises when the absentee partner in Jeannie's store threatens to sue for full ownership and Jeannie hooks up with her ex-boyfriend the law student (Alex Karpovsky) and around the same time Lauren must decide whether to take up a position at a school in Kenya. Don't expect intensity of any kind in Bujalski's films; the emotions range from mild annoyance to bemusement, but within that minimal palette he's a master.
