Review: Tooth Fairy

It bites

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson dons a pink tutu and wings as Derek, a hockey player who's earned the nickname "The Tooth Fairy" for his knack for knocking out opposing players' bicuspids on the ice — behavior that's depicted as both violent and bloodless, the norm in kids' movies. Despite the comic potential of putting the former wrestler in such attire, this film from Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2 and 3) is mostly laugh-free and, uh, toothless.

Having been issued a summons from the Department of Dissemination of Disbelief, Derek is sentenced by the Head Fairy (Julie Andrews, alas) to become a real Tooth Fairy after telling the young daughter (Destiny Whitlock) of his girlfriend (Ashley Judd) that the dollar-delivering pixies don't exist — a statement that further cripples a fantasy-land department already low on funding. I'm no economist, but giving cash to every kid who loses a tooth seems like a broken business model.

Any real-world comparisons between the Sarah Palin-like Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner) and her African-American opponent, Destiny (Yara Shahidi), are encouraged in this over-churned movie that presents itself as a "cutthroat story of greed, blackmail, sex, and butter."
