Nothing jells like a band who play constantly, and this Nashville foursome tour all the time — but as legendary R&B singer Delbert McClinton’s core back-up group. When they step into the spotlight on their own, they become that amalgamation of ’60s pop, British Invasion rock, roadhouse music, ’70s arena bluster, and psychedelia called Dick 50.
On their debut, their big-but-basic sound embraces those styles effortlessly, with keyboardist Kevin McKendree and guitarist Rob McNelley taking the vocal leads. “Flyin’ Now” would fit the Black Crowes’ repertoire; “Down” edges toward space rock, thanks to the playful six-stringing of McKendree, who also pastes a wickedly angular riff on “Medicine Man.” They’re ace with harmonies, too, since that’s a requirement of residency in Music City. And they have a sense of humor, as you can hear in the cuddly apocalyptic ditty “2012” and the closing surf noir “Theme from Dick 50.”
