Start your FRIDAY (the 21st) at Firehouse 13 with Centredale-bred wordsmith SYMMETRY (who teamed with Seattle producer Ryan Lewis on their acclaimed ‘09 debut) along with the active VOLCANO KINGS (8 pm, all-ages, 401.270.1801), then get over to Empire Street for WHAT CHEER? BRIGADE’s five-year anniversary party, with special guests ARCING (with former Sweetthieves bassist Hilary Jones) and Brooklyn’s VEVERITSE. Presumably, this will be F-ing bananas and well worth the $8 at the door (401.831.9327). A busy SATURDAY (the 22nd) night downtown begins with THE INTEL’s final show going down at Club Hell (all ages and doors at 6 pm, 401.709.3923), then scurry upstairs to Jerky’s and catch my peeps TALLAHASSEE (Wolfe Moon is fantastic, and singer Brian Barthelmes reports the band will release a new EP soon) opening for LAST GOOD TOOTH and DIAMOND DOVES, which includes members of Elvis Perkins in Dearland; 18+ and $8 at the door, 401.621.2244. A few blocks over on Westminster, local reggae-ska act THE STRESS join Boston’s FULL TANG at the 201 (401.454.4581). If you’re lounging seaside on Saturday, check out the enticing one-two punch at Billy Goode’s in Newport, with SIX STAR GENERAL and GIRL HAGGARD opening. Lo-dough cover and 21+, call 401.848.5013. Recover and unwind on SUNDAY (the 23rd) at AS220 with ALLYSEN CALLERY & THE LAND OF NOD (a recent mesmerizing set at the 201 was hands-down one of the best I’ve seen this year), with support help from PAUL METZGER, AMEN DUNES, and fellow Rhody songstress ANIKKI DAWN & THE DEMONS (401.454.4581).

There was something about the way Jay-Z hyped the crowd up at the start of show opener "Run This Town" that was not only emblematic of his performance style, but of his general appeal as a performer -- a key to his likability.
