• Who said jazz in Portland is dead? The PORTLAND QUARTET would beg to differ. Featuring MARK TIPTON on trumpet and vocals, JESSE FEINBURG on piano, PETER EBERHARDT on stand-up, and ROB SCHREIBER on drums, the quartet move from Great American Songbook (who doesn't really?) to film and TV scores and all sorts of eclectic choices.
• You might want to start getting excited about DIRIGO. Their name might not be the most inspiring, but the combination of STRANGEFOLK alums (ERIK GLOCKLER and LUKE PATCHEN MONTGOMERY) and Maine roots standard-bearers STEVE JONES and GINGER COTE has both the pedigree and the chops to be pretty damn impressive. They'll release their first disc in late July (probably) on CORNMEAL RECORDS.
• Speaking of Cornmeal, CHARLIE GAYLORD also has plans to release a DARIEN BRAHMS retrospective with both greatest hits and rarities. We're kind of excited about that, and wishing we'd seen that bad-ass performance people are talking about from the open to the recent Chris Isaak show.
