From Suede crashing the party to a 2000 wake-up call

APRIL 1992 • Suede appear on the cover of Melody Maker as "Best new band in Britain."

FEBRUARY 1993 • Suede perform at the BRIT Awards after nagging by the NME.

AUGUST 1994 • Oasis release Definitely Maybe, which goes on to sell seven million records.

OCTOBER 1994 • Menswe@r signs for half a million pounds after only their fifth live show.

OCTOBER 1994 • Oasis play Local 186 in Allston (now Wonderbar); punches are thrown in the back room, and the night ends at a Lilly Dennison afterparty.

FEBRUARY 1995 • Richey Edwards of the Manic Street Preachers disappears. Still not found.

MARCH 1995 • Elastica's debut record becomes the fastest-selling debut album in UK history.

JUNE 1995 • Pulp headline Glastonbury after the Stone Roses bow out; performance of "Common People" a captivating, defining moment.

AUGUST 1995 • Blur vs. Oasis — battling bands release singles on the same day. Blur's "Country House" outsells Oasis's "Roll With It" 274k to 216k; they finish Nos. 1 and 2 on UK chart.

FEBRUARY 1996 • Jarvis Cocker is arrested for crashing the stage during Michael Jackson's BRIT Awards performance.

FEBRUARY 1996Trainspotting released, making Iggy Pop and heroin relevant once again, and exposing Underworld's techno to mod kids.

AUGUST 1996 • Oasis performs two shows at Knebworth in front of 150,000 per night. More than 2.6 million people — one in 20 Brits — applied for tickets for the shows.

MAY 1997 • Suede's gear stolen outside the Paradise on Comm Ave, forcing the band to perform acoustic. Richard Oakes's guitar turns up years later at a second-hand shop outside Boston. Suede don't return to the US until 2011.

JULY 1997 • Noel Gallagher invited to meet with Tony Blair. Oasis releases bloated "D'You Know What I Mean"; UK tastemakers just not sure.

MARCH 1998 • Pulp release This Is Hardcore, declared the eulogy for Britpop; cultural hangover begins.

AUGUST 1998 • Damon Albarn and Justine Frischmann split up — Blur frontman pens sad-sack 13 record, Elastica lass turns to drugs before discovering M.I.A.

JULY 2000 • Limp Bizkit appears on the cover of Select. Goodnight, drive safely.

OCTOBER 2000 • Current Phoenix music editor Michael Marotta kisses Justine Frischmann at the Elastica afterparty at Axis, eventually gets cockblocked by Courtney Taylor-Taylor of the Dandy Warhols.
