Notes on Brian Viglione's many projects, plus Elaine O'Rourke and Guster

WALLFLOWER?: Viglione stays busy. |
Amanda Palmer may be the public face of Dresden Dolls, but drummer BRIAN VIGLIONE is no shrinking violet. He wraps up an Enormous Room residency — playing original modern jazz — with pianist Gil Aharon and bassist Andrew DiMola this Sunday. He just hosted two local drum clinics, and he has another one at JamSpot in Somerville on March 24. “The first lesson is how to hold your eyeliner pencil,” he quips. Viglione also played on HUMANWINE’s Fighting Naked, which was recorded in January at High-N-Dry and is slated for release later this month. Humanwine singer/guitarist Holly Brewer attended first grade with Viglione in Greenville, New Hampshire. He begins a three-week tour with her band on March 27 that circles back to the Paradise April 20. And in June he starts a three-week Dresden Dolls tour with Cyndi Lauper, Deborah Harry, and Erasure that stops at Bank of America Pavilion June 16.
In 1990, ELAINE O’ROURKE came to Boston from Ireland’s County Wicklow “to make loads of money and travel the country.” She did travel the country. Over time, she began to sing — first with Boston Rock Opera — and two and a half years ago, having moved to Gloucester, she began No Beginning, No End. “It kinda unfolded as we went along,” she says of the CD, which has a melancholic Celtic folk flavor. The singer/guitarist plays a free gig at Toad March 21 at 7 pm with violinist Jim Lounsbury and guest saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr. . . . GUSTER have teamed up with the environmental action group Reverb to launch the second Campus Consciousness Tour, which comes to the Opera House April 20 and 21.

The working title for Amanda Palmer's solo album is Who Killed Amanda Palmer? , but the Dresden Doll says she’s toying with another: That’s Amanda Fucking Palmer to You .
- Crying game
The Onion Cellar that Amanda Palmer envisioned is not the one that the ART will present at Zero Arrow Theatre.
- NEMO and the Boston Music Awards
It all started a week ago Wednesday at Avalon, where bands played, the audience mingled and schmoozed, a guy in a bear suit turned out to be Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione (I think), and the NEMO music festival kicked off with the 2006 Boston Music Awards.
- Sex, clubs and rock ’n’ roll
The first thing you’d have noticed about the Dresden Dolls’ CD-release show at the Orpheum April 21 was how different it felt to be seated in a theater while the duo played.
- Growing pains
So much has happened for the Dresden Dolls over the past year that it’s no surprise the duo fared so well in this year’s Best Music Poll.
- Life is a cabaret
The Dresden Dolls have been crazy busy since the release, earlier this year, of Yes, Virginia (Roadrunner), and their autumn itinerary ensures they’ll be applying the pancake make-up well into winter.
- All dolled up
We have seen the face of Boston rock and roll, and it’s got painted-on eyebrows.
- If it ain’t broke . . .
For the past three years, the only real suspense in the local end of the Best Music Poll has been whether the Dresden Dolls or the Dropkick Murphys would win more categories.
- Tracks of her tears
There are tears but no onions in The Onion Cellar. But who needs emotionally catalytic root vegetables when you have the Dresden Dolls?

The Dresden Dolls played Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors” tour this summer.
- Panoramic pop
The Pavilion was P-town for a night.
