• If you're looking for a little post-Christmas gift to yourself, you might want to check out the original recordings of LOVE, INC., one of Maine's first pop bands. MARC MAILHOT, the band's drummer, has released them for sale on his Web site, and they are only slightly cleaned up versions of what was originally recorded at EAB STUDIOS in Lewiston in April 1970. Songs include "Mary Beth," "Somewhere Went My Sunshine," the previously unreleased "Santa Fe," and "She Don't Care About Me," which charted in the Maine Top 10 in August of that year.
• CINDY BULLENS reports that the REFUGEES have commenced recording their second full-length. They've written five brand-new songs for the project (their last was basically re-recordings of the trio's solo works) and Bullens is promising one or two more. At the same time, Bullens is hard at work on a new solo disc, called Howling Trains and Barking Dogs, which will feature nine songs she co-wrote during her time in Nashville in the '90s, plus one brand-new tune. No word yet on release dates.

- Looking through Portland’s creative kaleidoscope
The annual League of Young Voters ReEmergence event will, organizers hope, be revitalized in 2010 by a relevant, popular focus — Southern Maine’s creative economy — and a wide spread of involved parties who range from visual artists to local arts associations to fashion designers.

- Homeboy Sandman | The Good Sun
If you’re not listening to Homeboy Sandman, you may be missing the most stylistically agile MC ever to spit. And if you don’t cop his official debut, then you’re depriving yourself of an album that’s worthy of more superlatives than could possibly fit in this or any other review space.
- Avi Buffalo | Avi Buffalo
Look, I get it: the last thing we need right now is yet another band who can be described as “sun-baked,” “reverb-soaked,” or even just “psychedelic.” But Avi Buffalo (I know! An animal name to boot!) are worth your attention for a few reasons.
- Thieves Like Us | Again and Again
When today’s musical magpies look back to the ’80s to steal the sonic shiny items that catch their ears’ fancy, they gravitate toward the Day-Glo sheen of that era’s false promise and anthemic vacuousness. Thieves Like Us, however, are not that breed of pilferer.
- James Lidell | Compass
Hey, I love Veckatimest as much as the next wimp, but the prospect of Grizzly Bear multi-instrumentalist Chris Taylor’s offering production to the latest album from Jamie Lidell didn’t seem promising when it was announced earlier this year. After all, Lidell has spent the past half-decade effecting an unlikely transition from introspective IDM nerd to extroverted R&B dude.

Although it’s led by a drummer, the Claudia Quintet is not necessarily about groove.
